Coprinus is a genus restricted to a few fungal species that have the peculiar characteristic of liquefying after their most mature stage of growth, forming a dark substrate full of spores - their way of guaranteeing reproduction. Coprinus comatus are specially cultivated for culinary purposes in their young phase, but it's still possible to prepare artistic paint from them. Thanks to these characteristics they are known as "Shaggy Ink Cap". Native to meadows and pastures in Europe and North America, they were introduced in several other regions of the world for various reasons, from their ease in preparing soups and risottos to their nematophagy, that is, the ability to kill and digest some types of soil worms.
